The Forward Momentum of Bloggery

What is bloggery?  The art and science of blogging, of course.

I used to have this professor who was fond of slapping a plastic overhead on the projector exclaiming, “Have a look at this piece of Tom Foolery.”

We would all glance over at eachother and groan.  He wasn’t kidding.  This was Tom Foolery.  It was one of Dr. Wildebeest’s famous equations.  Equations he had invented all by himself.  Equations that had four or five variables that were a mixture of convoluted calculous and mystical algebra. We would soon be invited to solve one of these foolish equations on a test.

Sometimes you will wonder how you stumbled into this foolish equation of a blog.  Oh, you will try to decipher it all, pondering the various variables involved: site design, writing, comments, growth…what it’s all about?

It is said that Albert Eistein had a flash recognition of his theory of relativity – he was riding on a ray of light – and it all fell together for him.  This probably won’t happen to you on your blog.  Your blog will probably move ahead like an elephant clumping through the Sahara, not like a ray of speeding light.

Site Design

I’m convinced you can put your site into motion yourself.  When I figured it out I wrote up a tutorial to share with others.  If the mechanics of design and implementation still elude you, hire someone to put it together for you.  But keep in mind you will still have to learn the bare bones of blog care yourself.  It’s a lot like cleaning the house and moving the furniture around.

Writing

This really is the meat and potatoes of your blog.  And for you vegetarians, the tofu and beans.  Recognize it may take awhile for you to get your footing, and that is okay.  Some very successful bloggers, like Vered, of MomGrind, for example, start out writing about a certain topic and switch.  You might get bored writing about one thing and want to diversify.  You can often do this by slightly diverging from your original topic.  Many business bloggers also write about inspirational topics.  Karen Swim, of Words for Hire, does this very successfully.

Growth

This is probably one of the hardest things to quantify.  Sure, you can measure your blogs growth by setting up a feedburner account and checking on how many people subscribe to your blog.  I check on these numbers.  But that is only one way to measure where you’re going.  Recognize that the art and science of bloggery is a process.  It is a journey that you have set yourself on.

If you get clear about your purpose, how you want to inform, enlighten, or entertain, then your statistical program can inform you who is linking to your blog and why.  I get really excited when I write a knock down article and I get a links from Trisha, at Ideas for Women , Ian Mackenkie, of Brave New Traveler, and Amy Derby, of Write at Home, for my post about Ethics in Photography.  It shows me that I can write stuff about topics that are important to me and people find it interesting.

Many bloggers lose their focus along the way. They get bored with blogging, or part of the blogging equation is not working for them.  Boredom is a fact of life.  I do not advocate giving something up just because you are bored with it.  But if you are encountering great resistance to blogging maybe you should give it up.  Only you can answer that question.

One way of looking at it is that the art and science of bloggery is challenging, and that it will help you grow.  After all, you do have to sweat over an equation before you solve it.  I’m thinking of the elephant analogy here, not the speeding ray of light.  But if you are one of these Albert Einstein bloggers who have it all in the bag – more power to ya!

Spontaneous Memoir Meme

Hopscotch, copyright Ellen Wilson

What time is it?  It’s meme time!

Recently I returned from Vermont to find the lovely Sandie Law of Geeked Off! tagged me with a meme.  Sandie likes to talk of all things geeky and wonderful and since I would like to indulge her in her quest for all things geeky, I will participate.  Sandie is also the author of Macaroni and Peas, a wonderful website dedicated to informing you how to get your kids to eat healthy foods on the quick and on a budget.

The name of the game is that you have to write a six word memoir phrase (jingle of words – whatever) and then tag five other people.

Why should we play?  Links are nice to get.  They improve your Google rating so people can find you, love you, and subsequently worship you.  Maybe not in that order.

Here’s mine:  Energy being dancing through space time.

Some of you will say Ahhh!  Some of you will say Wha?!!! And some of you might say, “Ellen, is this another one of your Zen things?”

To be a bit more definitive and solid I will say that the spontaneity of street photography holds much appeal for me.  I started out as a wildlife/nature photographer, but I am increasingly drawn to the funky fluidness of the street.  I like the expressions on people’s faces, odd social interactions, and the moments that capture our humaness.  With that said, let the tagging procedures begin!

First of all, I will tag Axe City of Design Interval because I heard him (I think you’re a he Axe, correct me if I’m wrong) saying that he wanted to remember forever in eternity the last word he wrote on his last exam paper at the University.  This strikes me as a noble goal and very interesting.  Second of all, I would like to tag Barbara Swafford of Blogging Without a Blog because that endeavor is very much like the sound of one hand clapping.  Plus, Barbara likes to promote bloggers on her blog and that is a very nice thing to do.  Someone should promote her, too.  Thirdly, there is Vered, of MomGrind, who is apparently jetsetting around the world and making me terribly jealous.  Now I know why my Google Analytics map of the world is lit up.  Take care, Vered, and we are all looking forward to your travel stories.  Fourthly, I will tag Stephanie of In Other Words who writes great fiction among many other honest things.  If you don’t think great fiction is about honesty than I challenge you to write some!  And last but not least, there is Karen Swim of Words for Hire, who I is on a vision quest for the truth in all things.  You rock, Karen!

There.  Said and done.  And in the words of Mr. Rogers:

Propel propel propel your craft

down the aqueous solution

verily verily verily

life is but an illusion

Getting Rid of Junk and Adding Some

Garage Sale, copyright Ellen Wilson

The other day I had a garage sale to get rid of junk.

When all of this stuff became “junk” I cannot recall, but when it did it wound up in the loft of the garage.  When it came time to sell it it wound up in the bottom of the garage and in the driveway.

It always seems we are acquiring more material things to make us happy.  We attach to them for a period of time and then we grow less fond of them.

Right now I don’t care much for material things.  Maybe someday I’ll buy a Porsche, but right now it doesn’t really interest me.  Of course if I could afford a Porsche, I probably wouldn’t be having a gararge sale.

The material I care about is creative, and my home is the stable base of my creative foundation.  My house will be 100 years old in 2012.  I think I will throw it a birthday party.

My Internet house is my blog, and it is only about six months old.  A mere baby, though that might seem like a long time in Internet time, since everything moves so fast here – like the speed of light.

You will notice that I have been accumulating some junk here – like Adsense.  I am trying to make a bit of change on my blog as I did at my garage sale because we all know blog posts take time to write and it’s nice to try and pay yourself for all that effort.   I don’t expect to make a lot of money, as I have noticed many of you bemoaned the fact that Adsense doesn’t pay very well, if at all.  If you have any Adsense advice please feel free to share.

I also have added a Amazon Showcase plugin by Aaron Forgue.  I like the fact that you can choose the books you want on your blog.  Where as you can’t choose the ads from Adsense, and some of the ads seem kind of stupid – things about swords and helicopters on some of my posts.

There is a nice plugin I uploaded by Joe Tan that keeps track of your Google Analytics data and RSS feed subscription data called WordPress Reports.  I downloaded this plugin to track who was coming and going because I plan to sell my stock photography from this site.  I will sell my own stock or get in with another stock company, I haven’t decided yet.  Either way I will probably advertise from this site.  And as my Marketing and Sales Goddess friend, Karen Swim says, marketing is the precursor to sales.

Since I have been messing around with my RSS feed account I may have messed up the settings, so if you do subscribe to my blog, 1. thank you, and 2. please add the feed again if it doesn’t work because like I said, I may have messed up the settings.

Also, if you have any questions about any plugins or what nots you see on my site, please ask.  There are no secrets in this house.  If I can share some information with you, I would be happy to.

All I ask is that you wipe your feet on the mat and don’t break the China.
